CHN3021: Final Oral Exam

Daytime classes: Monday 12/10 of Week #15.

Evening classes: Tuesday 12/11 of Week #15.

Your final oral exam is as follows:

I. First, 2 or 3 students perform a skit.

1) Due to the time limit, please finish your skit within 2 min. - 3 min.

2) Your short skit could be on any appropriate and interesting topc, not necessarily those topics covered in your textbook.

3) Please evenly distribute the workload among the students.

4) Though performing as a group, students will be individually graded based on such criteria as use of more complex vocab and patterns, accuracy, fluency, and the "drama" factor.

II. After the skit, each student have a one-on-one interview with an instructor.

Though there're 5 groups of questions on the sheet, you are only required to answer 1 group of questions, which the instructor will randomly pick.

Please find your skit partner(s) asap and allow youselves enough time for preparation.

Should you have any questions, please ask me. Xiexie!

给你介绍一本中文书

这是一本十分有意思的中文书。介绍了很多汉字的起源(origin)和在生活里的运用(application)。UMN的图书馆有这本书!

China: Empire of Living Symbols (Hardcover) by Cecilia Lindqvist (Author)

From Publishers Weekly (from www. Amazon.com)

http://www.amazon.com/China-Empire-Symbols-Cecilia-Lindqvist/dp/0201570092

Many of the 50,000 Chinese characters in use today can be traced back to ancient, inscribed oracle bones and bronzes. Drawing on archeological finds of recent decades, Lindqvist, a Swedish scholar who studied Chinese writing in Beijing, tells the fascinating stories behind the meaning and evolution of scores of Chinese characters. She notes that the original character for "hand" may well have been a picture of a hand with five fingers; neolithic jars were prototypes for the character for "wine"; the character for "speak or word" has a basic meaning, "large flute." Other characters relate to everyday life (houses, carts, clothes) or to the countryside, plants and animals. A testament to the continuity of Chinese culture, this beautiful book is illustrated with ancient inscriptions, 18th-century woodcuts and photographs of contemporary life demonstrating how ideogrammatic images recur as archetypes through the centuries.

http://im.qq.com/

Welcome! 欢迎!

Students, welcome to the CHN 3021 blog! Here I will post Chinese langauge learning and cultural resources that hopefully will be both interesting and useful to you. If you have any Chinese-related announcements or recommendations, I will be glad to post here as well so that you could share great resources with your classmates.

Here is my first recommendation for CHN 3021 students: Xiaoi the online chat robot. Xiaoi (Little I, namely, Little "I, Robot") is a cute and intelligent robot whom you can chat with through Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger or just web.
Xiaoi knows the Chinese language pretty well, and also know some basic English. Conversations with the super smart Xiaoi are always full of fun. For students of Chinese, the chat robot is a particularly handy tool for language practice.

Xiaoi also provides many a useful service, such as weather forcast and map search. Users can also invite friends to play games online through the Xiaoi robot. http://www.xiaoi.com/
